Salmonella Strains Found, 1 Million Pistachios Recalled

green-pistachioBoston (SmartAboutHealth) - According to recent reports, the Food and Drug Administration has announced yesterday that a California based food processing plant is recalling up to 1 million pounds of roasted pistachios that may have been contaminated with salmonella.

Originating from Setton Farms in Terra Bella, California, the nuts were packaged for resale or simply used as additional ingredients in other products such as ice cream and trail mix.

Although there are no illness links to the pistachios, Kraft Foods has found salmonella strains in a routine test last week.

The FDA was advised and has urged consumers to not consume any pistachio products. They also advise to not through away any products as the products can lead to easier tracing of contamination.

After contaminated peanut butter products were found earlier this month containing the salmonella bacteria, hundreds of Americans developped salmonella poisoning including 9 deaths.

Weight-Loss Products Warned by FDA

fda-logoBoston (SmartAboutHealth) - According to recent reports, an nationwide alert was announced Friday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration about weight-loss products that contain undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients.

Herbal Xenicol, Slimbionic and Xsvelten are products added to the alert and fenproporex, fluoxetine, furosemide and cetilistat are all undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients added to the warning list.

The FDA stated that many of these crossed out products may be marketed as dietary supplements and are promoted and sold on various online web sites and in certain retail stores / beauty salons. These products are said to be illegal and haven’t been approved by the FDA.

Baby bottles containing BPA no longer produced by 6 more companies

Boston (SmartAboutHealth) - According to recent reports, 6 major firms have now decided to stop selling baby bottles containing bisphenol A.

BPA is a chemical used in the making of platic materials, and it has been proven in previous studied that the chemical can hard a child’s development.

The measure passed this week will ban the sale of baby bottles and cups for children under the age of 4.

The industry still contends that the BPA is unharmful, however studies have proven the opposite.

Playtex Products Inc., Gerber, Evenflo Co., Avent America Inc., Dr. Brown and Disney First Years will be announcing shortly that they will no longer be producing bottles containing BPA in their products.

“Eliminating bisphenol A from baby bottles is an important first step,” said state Sen. Fran Pavley, D-Los Angeles.

One step ahead, Canada has already taken a serious approach towards this issue and has already banned the sale of baby bottles containing the chemical.
