..............Washington (SmartAboutHealth) - The American Cancer Society is hosting the 32nd annual Great American Smokeout today across the U.S. with the goal of trying to get people to quit smoking for at least 1 day.

As of right now, smoking continues to be a decline in the U.S., but there are still roughly 45 million Americans who smoke.

The American Cancer Society holds the Great American Smokeout each and every year and has done so for over 3 decades now with a great deal of success.

The goal of the Greta American Smokeout is to try and cut down on the number of smokers in the U.S.

This would in turn help reduce diseases such as lung cancer, among other things.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has joined in on the cause as they want no more than 12% of the U.S. population smoking byr 2010 .

Their reports have shown they are on the way as smoking was reduced by around 21% down to 19.8% from 2006 to 2007.
