Boston (SmartAboutHealth) - A new study published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynaecology has found that mothers who breastfeed reduce their risk of both heart attack, as well as stroke.
This new study showcases one of the many health benefits of breastfeeding for both the mother as well as the baby.
Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh used data from the Women’s Health Initiative Study to look at a group of nearly 140,000 postmenopausal women.
The idea behind the study was to see if there were any added benefits for the mother if they were to breastfeed their baby.
What they found was actually pretty amazing, as breastfeeding alone was found to reduce their risk of heart attack, as well as stroke.
Overall, mothers who breastfed cut their risk of both heart attack and stroke by roughly 10%.
All of the women in the study were in their 50s and were asked about their breastfeeding history, health history, etc.
This shows that breastfeeding is just as healthy for the mothers as it is for the baby.
