Our skin may not be as clean as we think as a study has found that it actually contains thousands of dirty germs.
Healthy skin is just that, healthy, but it also is home to many types of different bacteria, that can be very dangerous for our health if it enters our bloodstream.
This latest study conducted by researchers from the U.S. National Human Genome Research Institute, gives us lots to think about when it comes to skin care.
The researchers used the same technique used to decode the human genome to analyze the many different types of bacteria found on our skin.
The researchers took samples from skin areas including; armpits, inside the nose, behind the ears, and under the hair on the scalp.
What is the most interesting finding, is the fact that there are a wide array of different bacteria that call our skin their home.
“All our knowledge had been based on what we could culture in the laboratory,” said lead researcher Julia A. Segre. “Culturing puts a bias on what you can study. You’re limited to what you can grow at a certain temperature in enriched media. In culture, you can find what you are looking for, but it’s hard to find what is not there.”
