will_national_healthcare_decisionsBoston (SmartAboutHealth) - Today is a big day if you want to make your wishes known in regards to your health, as Friday marks National Healthcare Decisions Day.

The whole idea behind National Healthcare Decisions Day is to really drive home the importance of Americans stating their wishes in regards to their health, what they want after they pass away, etc.

This is part of a major national campaign that reminds Americans and really pushes them to fill out wills while they are alive, as well as to make it known what they want in terms of medical treatment.

Americans need to state their wishes to family members and do what they can to put things into writing so that their closest family members can truly follow their wishes as they near the end of their lives.

Hospitals all across the U.S. will hold seminars to help teach Americans about the steps that they can take to plan accordingly.

The fact is that only about 30% of patients in hospitals have living wills, and less than 50% who have severe illnesses have stated what they want should they not be able to make decisions and be aware of his or her situations.

More than 25% of patients who are dying lack the ability to make decisions about their health care, which is why planning and making advance decisions is so important.
