Washington (SmartAboutHealth) - Researchers have found that breast cancer in women can regress on its own without the need for any invasive treatment.

A study was carried out at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health on two groups of women, focusing on the incidence of breast cancer.

Two groups of women were looked at including one group of 119,000 women aged 50 to 64 who had regular mammograms from 1996 to 2001, and another group of 110,000 women from 1992 to 1997 who did not have regular mammograms.

Researchers found that the incidence of breast cancer was 22% in the first group with regular mammograms.

An interesting find though was that for the majority of these cases, the breast cancer tumors actually regressed on their own.

Researchers stated that if the breast cancer was left alone, the body would have cured itself.

This showed that mammograms, in some cases, could lead to dangerous and unnecessary invasive cancer treatment.

The study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
