Washington (SmartAboutHealth) - A new report has revealed a spike in the number of gay men in China who are HIV positive.

The past three years have seen a spike in the number of gay men infected with HIV in China according to the Ministry of Health.

A survey was done on 61 cities in China, looking at thousands of men in the country.

They found a 0.4% increase in the gay population that is infected with HIV in China.

Overall, 4.9% of the gay population in China is HIV positive.

Heterosexual intercourse was attributed to 40.4% of the new cases of HIV in China.

On top of that, 5.1% was linked to homosexual intercourse.

The use of drugs was said to cause 28.3% of the new cases.
