Washington (SmartAboutHealth) - Scientistis have managed to actually create a nerve disease known as SMA or spinal muscular atrophy in a lab, and will now use the disease to conduct research
Scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Missouri-Columbia carried out the research on this nerve disease which impacts muscle function, and have made progress to this point.
They managed to use skin cells from a child who had the disease, and then created iPS cells or induced pluripotent stem cells
They have managed to develop the disease in this form, where it can grow in a lab for years.
They will now be able to use these cells to study the development of the disease, and create treatments for it.
The new research has been published in the journal Nature.
