A woman from Queens is the second resident of New York to lose her life after being diagnosed with swine flu.

The woman, in her 50’s also had an underlying health condition that health officials are saying did definitely contribute to her death from the swine flu virus.

Health officials are keeping her name, and the hospital at which she was treated, confidential at this time.

Back on May 17, Mitchell Wiener, an assistant principal at a Queens middle school was the first New Yorker to die from swine flu.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, in a statement released Sunday night, said: “My father also died in his 50s because of an underlying health condition. I remember how hard that was on my mother, my sister and me, and my thoughts and prayers are with this woman’s family.”

“As we see more cases in the community we are going to see more severe illness and possibly death,” said Jessica Scaperotti, a health department spokeswoman. “If you’re sick right now with flu, you probably have H1N1.”

According to the World Health Organization, more than 12,500 cases world wide have been reported since the outbreak began.

Since the outbreak began, 86 deaths have been linked to it.
