Boston (SmartAboutHealth) - According to new research, certain proteins may be the key to early detection of ovarian cancer.
Ovarian cancer is something which impacts many women all around the world, and up to this point, early detection of it is something that has been out of the reach of medical professionals.
New research aims to change this though, as proteins may be the key to early detection of this terrible disease.
Researchers carried out work on a group of women who had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and a group who were not.
Blood samples were taken to evaluate and see if any biomarkers could help detect an early risk of ovarian cancer.
What they found was that there were 3 proteins which increased years before ovarian cancer could actually be diagnosed.
This would allow the ovarian cancer to develop without actually being detected or diagnosed with current screening methods.
With more research, these proteins could be the key to early detection of ovarian cancer.
The 5-year survival rate of ovarian cancer patients when it is detected early is above 90%.
