Washington (SmartAboutHealth) - According to a new study carried out by Harvard researchers, light can cause a migraine headache to worsen greatly, and it has to do with neurons in the brain.
Harvard Medical School researchers have worked to carry out a study to try and figure out exactly why light causes a migraine headache to get worse, and they have succeeded.
The study was carried out with a group of people, half of them being legally blind, and the other half completely blind.
They then had the volunteers try to sense light, and obviously, one group was able to do so, while the other was not.
What they found was that those who could detect light had their migraine headache worsen due to a reaction in the brain.
The light caused brain neurons to become active, and remain active, causing the migraine to be far more painful.
It is common for people who get migraine headaches to be sensitive to light.
What has not been known before though is what causes them to be so sensitive.
This shows that it has something to do with light causing neuron activity in the brain.
The study has been published in the journal Nature Neuroscience. Online.
