Washington (SmartAboutHealth) - Researchers are getting closer to discovering the origins of the medical mystery is stuttering.
Researchers from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders have been working to figure out the cause of stuttering for years, just as the entire medical world has done for centuries now.
It seems apparent though from their recent work that genes play a huge role in stuttering as a whole.
The researchers revealed that three genetic mutations in certain brain cells actually could be the cause of stuttering.
These mutations were found to be consistent in those who had a stuttering problem.
The cells are located in the area of the brain that has to do with speech.
Stuttering impacts millions of people, keeping them from having a normal speech flow.
This is the first research of its kind to nail down genes which could be linked directly to stuttering.
The study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
