Boston (SmartAboutHealth) - World No Tobacco Day has been observed each and every May 31 for years now, starting for the first time back in 1987. The day is observed on a global scale, with this year’s theme focusing on the tobacco industry and the way in which they target women and kids in their advertising.
World No Tobacco Day is a 24-hour event in the minds of millions of people all around the world.
The idea is that for this one day, the whole world should refrain from using tobacco.
On top of that, the day is also used as a way to push awareness in regards to the negative health effects that the use of tobacco can cause.
The World Health Organization (WHO) started this event many years ago and every year there is a theme.
The theme this year, as stated above, is “Gender and tobacco with an emphasis on marketing to women.”
The fact of the matter is that out of all of the smokers in the world, only 20% of them are women.
Tobacco use among women though is increasing, and the feeling is that this may be due to advertising directly towards this gender.
A study has shown that more young girls than boys are using tobacco and smoking cigarettes, meaning the disparity between the genders is roughly zero.
Tobacco is responsible for over 5 million deaths around the world each and every year.
