Washington (SmartAboutHealth) - A new study has revealed that women may want to go the route of receiving one single blast of targeted radiation when it comes to helping stop the risk of recurrence of breast cancer.
Researchers led by Jayant S. Vaidya from the University College London and David Joseph from the University of Western Australia aimed to see if a targeted radiation treatment would be a good choice for women battling breast cancer.
The idea behind it is to have just one shot of radiation be received aimed right at the breast cancer tumor.
This is far different than the typical radiation treatment which includes multiple blasts of radiation that are aimed at the whole breast.
Researchers compred how each treatment would do in two different groups of roughly 1,000 women.
They then followed and monitored the women for a period of 4-years to see how high the rate of recurrence would be for the breast cancer patients.
What researchers found was that there was no benefit to receiving either of the two treatments.
With that said, it is much more likely that women should opt for the targeted blast of radiation as it would have less of an impact on the body, would cost less in terms of medical treatment, and has the same long-term effects.
After 4-years, recurrence was seen in 6 women who had the targeted radiation compared to 5 who did not.
The study is set to be published in the journal The Lancet.
