Boston (SmartAboutHealth) - A campground in southern California had to be closed over the weekend after a squirrel tested positive for the deadly plague disease.
The plague is a bacterial disease that results in symptoms such as a fever, the chills, and can even lead to the deadly pneumonic plague.
The squirrel that tested positive for the plague was captured some two weeks ago and the fear is that if the squirrel had bitten anyone, it could have spread the disease.
Health officials in Los Angeles County has put out a warning to everyone, informing them to stay clear of squirrels if possible.
It has also been suggested that wearing bug repellent can go a long way in keeping these furry animals away as well.
The campground has been closed indefinitely for now as officials want to test all squirrel nests, burrowing areas, etc.
Once the tests come back and if they come back negative, the southern California campground will be allowed to re-open.
There have been less than 5 cases of human plague in Los Angeles County in the last 25-years.
