.Washington (SmartAboutHealth) - The advocacy group Public Citizen is urging the FDA to ban the sale of the diabetes drug Avandia due to the serious side effects it has been linked to.
Public Citizen has stated that the diabetes drug Avandia can lead to death from liver failure, and also poses other life-threatening risks as well.
The group claims that the risks associated with it far outweigh the benefits of the drug.
Public Citizen has made it clear that they have found 14 cases where Avandia casued liver failure. This led to a total of 12 deaths.
The group found out about the deaths in the Adverse Event Reporting System of the FDA.
Public Citizen has stated that the drug also increases the risk of heart atack by 40%, doubles the risk of heart failure, and also doubled the risk of bone fractures.
Other events it increases the risk of include vision loss, as well as anemia.
This has sparked the call to ban Avandia, as the fear is that it could lead to more deaths and other adverse events.
