Washington (SmartAboutHealth) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has come out and stated that kids who take attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drugs are more likely to have hallucinations.
A study carried out by the FDA aimed to see if there were any side effects to ADHD drugs such as hallucinations or other psychotic episodes.
They looked at drugs such as Adderall XR, Focalin, Metadate CD, as well as Ritalin and data from nearly 50 different clinical trials.
What they found was that in over 850 cases, hallucinations occured in kids who were on these drugs.
These hallucinations were scary to the children and were seen at a rate way above normal.
In total, 1 or 2 out of every 100 kids on the ADHD drugs had a hallucination.
Overall, the FDA found that around 2 out of every 100 children taking the medication suffered a hallucination or psychotic episode.
The study has been published in the journal Pediatrics.
