Washington (SmartAboutHealth) - According to a new study released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, baby boomers in the U.S. are still getting high, and are heavy users of drugs.
The study was released by the substance abuse division of the Department of Health and Human Services, and was carried out by taking a survey of adults in the U.S.
The survey data was compiled and put into the final report, the report on Illicit Drug Use Among Older Adults.
The report reveals some very interesting information, including the fact that baby boomers, who are now between the age of 50 and 54, are the heaviest drug users among all adults.
The study revealed that 9.3% of people ages 50 to 54 used any illicit drug from 2006 to 2008.
On top of that, marijuana use in this same age group was said to be at 6.1%, while non-medical use of prescription-type drugs was at 3.4%.
One people were age 65 or older, use of these drugs was virtually non-existent.
Those who carried out the study stated that due to this increased drug use by baby boomers, the need for mental health care will greatly increase by the year 2020, when they may develop health issues due to this drug use.
