Boston (SmartAboutHealth) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made history as they have given approval to the first generic blood-thinner, a generic version of the drug Lovenox from Sanofi-Aventis.
The FDA has been going back and forth in regards to whether or not this generic drug would be approved.
The fact of the matter though is that they have given it full approval, and this is likely going to open the doors for similar generics.
The generic form of Lovenox has the same base as the real thing, made from heparin, and has the same positive effect on patients.
The generic drug was developed by the generic division of Novartis, Sandoz.
The technology the generic was created from was developed by a company based in Cambridge, MA.
This technology, from Momenta Pharmaceuticals, is likely going to lead to the cloning of other complex drugs that have very particular mixtures.
We will have to wait and see in regards to just how many more drugs will get approval, but this could certainly open the flood gates up.
